Why People Are Going to Thailand for Surgery

Medical Tourism – this term basically means that people are opting to go to another country for 2 reasons:
  • Enjoy the sights, take tours, be a tourist.
  • Undergo a surgical procedure like breast augmentation.
It’s like hitting 2 birds with one stone – be on vacation while you’re being beautified. This just shows that the surgical industry (especially cosmetic surgery) in Thailand is more booming than ever and it’s not showing any signs of slowing down, especially this 2015.

But, why fly half way across the world for surgery? Why go through all the hassle of travelling when there are similar services within an arm’s reach? And, what is it with Thailand’s surgical services that make people come back for more?
Here are a few answers we can think of:
  1. The cost of surgeries is more affordable.
  2. Luxury hospitals.
  3. World-class care.
  4. Less hassle when paying the bill.
  5. You have the chance to vacation.
Thinking about visiting Thailand?
See if the doctor is a part of an international community of plastic surgeons.
Studies have shown that prices for surgeries and medical procedures in countries like Thailand are much lower compared to the prices in the United States. Even if it’s a surgical procedure that’s not under the category of cosmetic surgery, it would still be more affordable. Replacing a hip, for example, would typically cost $33,000 in the US but would only cost around $12,400 in Thailand.
If you’ve considered undergoing a cosmetic procedure yourself, you’ve probably heard of how the hospitals in Thailand are and they’re all true. The top hospitals have been designed to be ultra-efficient and relaxing. The general waiting time for diagnostic procedures, for example, is lesser and it doesn’t hurt that the waiting room has a fantastic view of the sand and the ocean.
It has been reported that top hospitals in countries like Thailand are, nowadays, exceeding Western standards for health care. From the doctor-patient interaction to the genuinely compassionate nurses to the after-care, it’s the Thailand top hospital’s attention to detail that really makes a difference.  There’s no “you’re in and you’re out” feeling for patients.
We’ve all gone through the process of getting discharged from a hospital and maybe we can all agree on one thing: it could get complicated especially if you have insurance. Being faced with confusing terms like “in-network vs. out-of-network” doesn’t happen when discharging from a top Thai hospital. In opposite, it’s as easy as checking out from a hotel.
Who doesn’t want to have a vacation? Once you’re in Thailand, there’s always a chance for you to see the sights before, in between or after your procedure. You’re going to be spending a significant amount of time in the hospital and it may get boring even if the hospital looks like a five-star hotel. Go out and explore (with your doctor’s consent, of course). You’re in an exotic destination so you have to take advantage of it.
With these advantages, it’s hard not to take Thailand as an option for medical or surgical procedures (and maybe a vacation). But, there are always a few things that you need to double check before you take the leap:
  1. Do your research.
  2. Get your questions ready before speaking to the doctor.
  3. Ask as many questions as possible about the procedure (equipment, implants, sutures, brand and etc).
