Preparing for Cosmetic Surgery in Thailand

Ok, so it is always our piggy banks we stock up first to save funds for a cosmetic procedure and Yes, it is very understandable that being financially prepared should be such a priority especially when you want to wear beauty with a golden price tag.

Without the proper preparation except your cash , all the years' savings might just go down the drain if there will be lack in attention given on some important "to-do's" and "not to do's" before surgery.

Here are some tips to highlight to get yourself more ready as a patient come operation day. enjoy!

Before everything, keep in mind that sometimes unpreparedness comes with our own consent. There are times when we consciously take small matters for granted; which in the case of a medical patient, might lead to stress, undesired results, failed operations, complications or death.(which are all to regret) These misfortunes are actually due to some lapses we trip ourselves into before even getting into the action.

Nuff of the scary disclaimer, let's get along with the lighter side!

Know more about the country (Thailand)

You might already have a grasp of knowledge about the procedure you are opt to but probably not the place where you decide to get it as a medical tourist. If you are bound to Thailand for major operative cosmetic procedures, It could be that Thailand will be your home sweet home for quite some time. If so, here are some things to be always minded of:

  • Cost of living- spending might be different from home; getting an idea of how much you could be spending for necessities in median will allow the chance to create a budget (apart from your medical expenses) like food, place to stay in, post-medications or maybe some leisure.
  • Currency- monetary value is also different and is constantly changing.  Don't forget to check the Internet for an updated exchange rate from Thai Baht to your local currency or dollars perhaps. Make favorable decisions.
  • People- especially when interacting with your doctors and nurses, knowing how to build a social relationship with Thais would be helpful. Thailand is not an English-speaking country; be patient in communicating with them and always try to wear a smile. Thais are naturally warm and caring people. Be polite with them and expect a good hospitality in return.
  • Food-Allergic with anything that's spicy? Of course there are other options, so research on what can be friendly for your taste buds or you will have to deal with hot flushes the rest of your stay.

Gather facts and know yourself

Always know what to expect--the ups and downs. Get information from people with medical background, friends who have had experience/s in that matter, or even Internet contributions.

It always cuts the worry when you are knowledgeable with facts, otherwise paranoia will consume you worrying about unnecessary things that could be just normal at the very end. (especially during the healing process)

-side-effects
-Downtime period
-fevers
-possible complications
-food and medication allergies/sensitivity
-things you can do and should avoid doing

You are not the only who's suppose to be knowledgeable about yourself, but your doctors as well.

-inborn food, medication, or any other allergies and sensitivities
-traumas and fears
-psychological conditions

**Doctors are not faith healers nor sorcerers. They won't know about your medical history unless you allow them to by telling them. It is your obligation to remind them on that.

Mindset

Jitters before a cosmetic surgery, especially away from home are normal experiences. Sleepless nights, anxiety-related stress, mood swings, just to name a few; but always try to think positive. Right information plus positive mindset is a golden key not just for a successful surgery, but on how you will continue life manifesting your inner beauty going externally.

Meditate. Certain meditation techniques can help relieve stress, reduce anxiety, and relax your senses. Practice to calm yourself before the operation so you can deal with yourself and your attending doctors / nurses accordingly when already in the hospital bed.

Post operative care

Post operative care is the crucial part of a cosmetic procedure. This will determine how successful the operation will be, depending on how the patient takes care of him/herself away from the doctor's eyes.

Take in consideration these things:

  • Home/the place you stay in- Before the operation, arrange your place in accordance to how condition will be after surgery (as told by your doctor). Some patients would be needing more space, less clutter, less hazard. Some will have difficulty in moving or walking around.
  • Daily diet adjustments- changes in diet might be suggested by your doctor . Some doctors even require eating a specific kind of food, some are asked to eat liquid food for a while, still depending on the type of surgery.
  • Downtime buddyHave someone to accompany you after the surgery. A family, a friend, or someone who can help you with things you won't be able to do while bandaged- driving, chores, etc.

  • Hospital profile

There are lots of big names in Thailand that are recognized internationally. There is Yanhee Hospital and Bumrungrad General Hospital. There are also smaller scale clinics that are highly competitive as well. To check the reputation of your hospital / clinic, check their profile in the Internet, their ISO's, certification from Thailand's public ministry for Health, and even patient testimonials.

  • Inquire your concerns (It's FREE...normally)

Medical establishments already have call centers and other online customer relations in English. These services are specially for foreigners. This is the chance to inquire about treatments, prices, or anything that concerns you without getting charged for professionals fee (at least most of them).

Fly to Thailand

There might be some things missed out, then again, readiness can only be fully determined by one's self. When savings are enough, the guts are steady, and you are physically, emotionally, and mentally ready, pick your bags and fly to Thailand.
