What Collagen really is?

Collagen is becoming more sacred in the name of beauty; some doctors and consumers consider it the 'elixir' to restore  youthful and radiant skin. In the realm of medicine, collagen is scientifically known for its re-constructive capabilities, that's why it has really something enticing to offer medically and aesthetically.
But really, aside from its beautifying benefits, do we really know enough about collagen? Perhaps an 'encyclopedia' definition would make us understand more about collagen - how it works, its composition, and its other benefits to the human body.
There are over 28 different types of collagen that gives strength and structure to many parts of the body. About 30% of the total protein content of the human body is collagen, making it the most abundant protein found in mammal species. Collagen is abundant in fibrous tissues such as skin, ligaments and tendons, as well as in the bones, blood vessels, the cornea of the eye, and in the gut that's why it is more often described as the "glue that holds the body together".

For the most part, collagen is appreciated for of its skin essentials. Collagen is very vital for strengthening blood vessels and giving the skin the elasticity without breaking any tissue. But due to aging, collagen degenerates, causing wrinkles, fine lines and other skin issues. Skin traumas and injuries also emit collagen and tissue. This also include those from depressed acne scars, chicken pox scars, and post surgical scars that can be improved with injectable collagen. As a result, collagen has gained popularity among teens, the elderly and those wishing for beauty.
Another elderly problem concerning collagen loss in bones and joints. Joint become less flexible and bones starts to deteriorate resulting to Arthritis and other bone problems. Hair is also a beneficiary of collagen. When collagen production slows down, hair will start to lose its natural color. Likewise, gum also benefits from a kind of collagen called “Bovine collagen” that helps hasten gum healing process. Scientist also found that collagen can be developed as a drug to prevent or reduce the risk of heart attack.
