Electrolysis is a cosmetic procedure for ridding out unwanted hair, especially in the bikini area and underarms.
Unwanted hair is a public enemy for most girls as these hair grow out with too much exposure to the public eye; underarm hairs, bikini line hairs, or sometimes even female mustache.

So how do unwanted hair grow?

Growth of these hairs are rooting from various factors. Hereditary or acquired hormonal imbalances, intake of affecting medications, or some illnesses that affect hair growth.
These stray hairs are really undesirable visually and hygienically for the greater public at-most, that's why some people would like them permanently removed or be absent for a long period of time.
Unwanted hair, specially the ones growing between the arms and the legs are also prone to bacteria which cause unpleasant odor. With electrolysis, it is said that it can reduce odor compared to other hair removal treatments because electric currents close the hair follicles, which has something to do with bacteria and odor.

Electrocution

Electrolysis is done by direct contact of an electrode device to the hair follicle to destroy its roots and prevent the hairs from growing back quickly or sometimes, permanently but usually, multiple treatments are needed before achieving an almost total hair shutdown. In some cases, 15-30 treatments are needed that's why electrolysis might be very costly and time consuming.
This kind of hair removal treatment won't need anesthesia, the procedure is almost painless, the patient would be able tolerate it until session ends.
Be always wary of risk when undergoing electrolysis. Always do business with a professional to avoid damage such as skin discoloration.

According to about.com. There are 3 different kinds of electrolysis:

Galvanic- The original electrolysis modality, is applied via direct current, resulting in a chemical change of salt and water to lye surrounding the hair follicle.

Thermolysis - Also known as radio- or high-frequency, uses alternating current to provide heat in the follicle.

Blend -A combination of the direct and alternating current, so that a chemical and heating action occur together or sequentially in the follicle. Since the advent of computerized epilators, there are many nuances to these current applications.
